While the role of The Sunrise Project board continues to evolve as the organisation grows and changes, it plays a key role supporting the executive team and providing top level governance for the organisation. The Sunrise Board has overall financial oversight, ensures compliance, manages risk and sets high level policies for the organisation. The Sunrise Board also plays an important role in supporting the executive team to provide high level strategic direction for The Sunrise Project’s programmatic work as well as managing growth and setting organisational culture. The Sunrise Board plays a critical role in inspiring support from donors through their composition, skills, experience, and networks, and enables accountability of the organisation to the movements that it supports.
We’re excited to be recruiting several new board members over the coming year. Ideally, you’ll be an experienced executive leader who understands the practicalities of building the energy revolution in Australia and how social movements can hasten this change. While you’re a big picture thinker who is excited about having an impact solving the climate crisis, you will understand the realities of the transition to clean energy in Australia’s National Electricity Market and will have a keen understanding of the human and social justice dimensions of transition in energy intensive communities. You will have a deep understanding of Aboriginal justice and the intersection with the Sunrise Project’s programs in the extractive industries and energy sector. Other desirable capabilities include an understanding of the challenges of scaling organisations whilst maintaining agility and creativity and nurturing a healthy work culture. Required Experience ● Expertise in the Australian energy transition and/or climate/energy politics ● Aboriginal perspective with deep understanding of Aboriginal justice as it relates to resource extraction, energy transition and climate justice ● A strong track record in strategic leadership roles ● Experience organising in and with diverse cultural communities in Australia Desirable Experience ● Understanding of the dynamics around Just transitions ● Deep insights of the social and technological disruptions that are changing the context of our work
