We are seeking a deputy editor to join our rural network on a full-time, 12-month contract.
We are seeking a deputy editor to join our rural network on a full-time, 12-month contract to support the rural network editor in commissioning, editing and producing stories, including from the network’s two graduate reporters and freelance journalists. Ideally this role will be based in NSW or Victorian rural locations, but candidates based in Sydney or Melbourne will also be considered. In this role, you will work closely with the rural network editor to identify and commission nationally important rural and regional news stories from NSW, Queensland and Victoria, plan coverage of rural issues and commission stories to ensure they meet the required brief, and write rural stories as required and directed by the rural network editor. You will also work on collaborative projects with news editors, reporters, data specialists and multimedia journalists from across Guardian Australia’s team, generate interesting original content, and assist the editor in covering stories in innovative ways including social, video and interactive reports.
This role will suit an individual with excellent knowledge of rural and regional issues, as well as contacts in rural and regional areas or a clearly demonstrated ability to get rapidly up to speed in a specialist area/region. They will possess solid journalistic experience on a news publication and enthusiasm for collaborating on video, audio, interactive and new forms of content for the web and mobile. A good understanding of media law and familiarity with the Guardian’s editorial code and values is highly regarded.
