Transport Canberra & Business Services delivers essential services Canberrans rely on each day including integrated public transport, public libraries, and provides administrative oversight to the ACT Public Cemeteries Authority which operates the Woden, Gungahlin and Hall cemeteries. It is also responsible for Domestic Animal Services, and commercial operations including Yarralumla Nursery, Birrigai and Capital Linen. The Kennel Master will be based at the Mugga Lane Animal Shelter in Symonston and will be responsible for maintaining procedures to ensure animal health and welfare is maintained. This will involve cleaning the facility, conducting health checks, feeding and administering medication, attending to minor wounds and abrasions, preparing enrichment activities and ongoing training for the dogs suitable for adoption. This role involves the supervision of a small team of Kennel Hands. The primary responsibilities for this position are to: • Daily feeding, watering and inspection of all animals, daily cleaning of animal housing areas i.e. hose out, replace bedding, feeding and watering utensils. • Administering medication and treatment as prescribed by veterinary practitioner. • Report any signs of illness, disease or discomfort observed in animals to the Operations Manager immediately. • Preparation and provision of environmental enrichment activities for animals including exercising and training of animals as required. • As required, determine the suitability of dogs for rehoming, including preliminary temperament testing. • Cleaning and disinfection of the vet room after consultations. • Facilitate ‘Meet and greets’ between dogs and potential owners. • Preparedness to transport dog(s) for veterinary treatment if required, assist with vet duties, including the euthanasia of dog(s). • Operate and maintain Domestic Animal Services’ Information Technology Systems to ensure accurate data in relation to applications, registrations and renewals is maintained. • Perform the duties of an authorised officer under the Domestic Animals Act 2000 and Animal Welfare Act 1992 and/or other legislation
The following capabilities form the criteria that are required to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position: 1. Demonstrated knowledge and skills handling and controlling dogs, including the ability to read a dog’s body language. 2. Under limited supervision, determine work priorities, organise workload to meet deadlines and achieve outcomes under pressure 3. Effectively communicate and liaise with staff, volunteers and members of the public to provide high quality customer service. 4. Ability to interpret and apply legislation preferably within a regulatory environment 5. Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the TCCS values framework, workplace respect, equity and diversity framework, workplace health and safety best practise and industrial democracy principles and practise. 6. Willingness to obtain accreditation to undertake the Public Access Test for assistance to animals. Compliance Requirements / Qualifications: • Certificate III in Dog Behaviour and Training or willingness to obtain. • Current non restricted drivers licence. • Animal Husbandry/Handling experience is desirable specifically dog handling.
