Woolworths Group
First Nations Advisory Board Member
Contract | Approx. $60,000 per annum| Australia-wide
This role is only open to candidates who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

About the organisation
The Woolworths Group is a diverse family of retail businesses united by a shared purpose: creating better experiences together for a better tomorrow.

In 2021, Woolworths Group established its First Nations Advisory Board (FNAB) to strengthen its commitment to reconciliation and embed culturally safe, equitable, and respectful practices across the business. The eight-member Advisory Board has a minimum of 75% First Nations representation. It includes Woolworths Group team members (both Indigenous and non-Indigenous) as well as external Indigenous business leaders. The Board provides expert guidance on the Group’s reconciliation strategy and advice on matters impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and Woolworths’ operations within them.

About the role
Woolworths Group is seeking to appoint a new external member to its First Nations Advisory Board. They are looking for a respected Indigenous leader with demonstrated expertise in employment, retention and careers, particularly for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees. This role requires someone who can provide frank, fearless, and independent advice while working collaboratively with senior leaders to influence change. The Advisory Board meets approximately 5–6 times per year, with additional opportunities for engagement outside formal meetings to build relationships, provide advice, and support Woolworths Group’s reconciliation commitments.

About you
You are a respected First Nations leader with a strong reputation in your field and a commitment to improving employment outcomes for mob. You are experienced working across metropolitan, regional, and remote contexts and understand the importance of culturally safe, community-informed approaches. You bring experience advising large organisations, with a practical understanding of the role of an advisory board (as distinct from a fiduciary board of directors). You’re known for your ability to provide clear, independent and constructive advice while building collaborative, trusted relationships. You value active engagement, bring fresh insights and are prepared to contribute meaningfully between meetings to help drive genuine change.
Key Selection Criteria

  1. Established reputation as a leader with demonstrated expertise in employment, retention, and career development for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  2. Experience working comfortably across metropolitan and regional/remote contexts.
  3. Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with large organisations to influence change.
  4. Commitment to active participation, including engagement outside of formal meetings.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trusting, respectful relationships with diverse stakeholders.

Remuneration and Time Commitment

  • Annual Fee: Approximately $60,000, paid quarterly on presentation of an invoice to your company or ABN.
  • Expenses: Travel and accommodation costs covered separately.
  • Time Commitment:
    - 5–6 official Advisory Board meetings per year (each approx. half–one day, plus preparation time).
    - Additional informal engagement between meetings, as needed and agreed.
    - Annual dinner with the Woolworths Group Board.

Please note that advisory boards are distinct from a board of directors. While members are expected to act with care and diligence, they have no fiduciary responsibilities or decision-making authority; their role is to provide expert advice and recommendations to the Woolworths Group.
