About the organisation
The Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) is a not-for-profit cultural organisation established for the promotion of community broadcasting including both radio and television.
Community broadcasting is a vital part of the Australian media landscape. Over 450 radio stations broadcast more than 500 services across Australia and play an important role in providing a voice for communities that aren’t adequately serviced by other broadcasting sectors.

The CBAA was born in 1974 from a desire to help community broadcasters be stronger and more successful. The CBAA is an internationally recognised not-for-profit organisation and represents 90% of the sector's stations as members.

About the role
Non-Executive Directors are responsible for contributing to the strategic direction for the organisation. CBAA is a skills-based Board and has identified the below areas in which they are seeking to grow their expertise and leadership:

  • Audience development and transformation using digital technologies
  • Technology governance and cyber security
  • A background in legal, policy, reform or regulation would be advantageous
  • A background in advising or consulting with government would be advantageous
  • Industry knowledge relevant to the CBAA, including understanding challenges facing community radio and the media industry is desirable

About you
You are an experienced professional with leadership qualities who has worked in First Nations Affairs and is committed to promoting the identities of local communities and contributing to social inclusion. You value diversity as the foundation of your core working principles. You have skills and experience in governance and preferably previous experience on a Board. You understand how not-for-profit organisations operate and be able to bring your corporate or business acumen to support this. You are someone who can demonstrate discretion and diplomacy. Experience in the media industry is desirable.

Requirements
  • Cultural competency covering an understanding of First Nations people and their communities.
  • Core governance skills including a solid understanding of Director responsibilities and duties, and demonstrating required corporate governance skills.
  • A willingness to support organisational values and contribute to the Board and committees.
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and an ability to engage in robust discussions.
  • Passionate about community media broadcasting and its future.
