About the organisation
The Coalition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peak Organisations (Coalition of Peaks) is a representative body of more than 80 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled peak organisations and members who have come together to work in partnership with Australian governments to improve the life outcomes for our people. The Coalition of Peaks share a belief that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should have a meaningful say on policies and programs related to Closing the Gap through formal partnerships with Australian governments at all levels. The Peaks Policy and Secretariat Team (Secretariat) supports the work of the Coalition of Peaks, providing high level and comprehensive policy and strategic advice to Peaks Members, to support the implementation and monitoring of actions in the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.

About the roles
The Coalition of Peaks Secretariat has multiple vacancies at the Policy Officer and Senior Policy Officer levels across two teams:
• Policy and Strategy
• Closing the Gap Implementation

The Closing the Gap Implementation and Policy and Strategy team work closely with Coalition of Peaks members to lead key programs of work outlined in the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. This includes, but is not limited to, the implementation of Policy Partnerships, Place-Based Partnerships and government transformation programs.

The positions will work as part of a small team to support the delivery of a range of high-quality policy analysis and advice relating to the Coalition of Peaks’ objectives and in support of the implementation of the historic National Agreement on Closing the Gap. The position works under supervision of the Assistant Director and works closely with other members of the Coalition of Peaks Policy and Secretariat team across policy, strategy and sector strengthening.

About you
You will bring previous experience in policy, research and/or advocacy roles, strong written communication skills and well-developed analytical skills to be able to build a strong evidence base to influence policy and implementation decision-making. You will have experience working collaboratively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and government stakeholders and an understanding of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.

Key Selection Criteria

  1. A minimum of 1 year policy, advocacy or research experience (Policy Officer) or A minimum of 3 years working in policy, research and/or advocacy roles (Senior Policy Officer)
  2. Highly developed cultural acumen, including a deep understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and communities, and demonstrated experience engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, leaders and communities.
  3. Demonstrated understanding of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.
  4. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, including demonstrated attention to detail and an ability to effectively communicate complex ideas to a range of audiences.
  5. Effective analytical skills in gathering and analysing information and complex data to make informed decisions
  6. Flexibility to adapt to a dynamic work environment with shifting priorities.
  7. Proven ability to liaise, consult and negotiate with a wide range of stakeholders

  • It is preferred that the position is based in Canberra, however, remote working may be considered for the right candidate. A small relocation allowance, up to $2,000 may be considered for a successful non-Canberra based candidate who is prepared to relocate.
